Lankan Tucker in Brunswick West is the real deal, and the kitchen is very creative when it comes to shaping classic Sri Lankan flavours for unique offerings. I’ve only been once but the Buriyani pie is an easy favourite. Think of it like a Shepard’s Pie with potato mash, chips and chicken curry gravy.

Fusion dishes are dangerous if they’re not carefully judged they can turn into messy melanges that diminish the cultural strands that play into them. But this one is an all seeing homage that is flat-out delicious.

Couple Nerissa Jayasingha and Hiran Kroon, who opened Lankan Tucker in a quiet pocket of Brunswick West in 2016, agree. Their cosy place has all the trappings of a Melbourne café – St Ali coffee, laidback vibes, lots of greenery, service-with-a-smile – but look closer and you’ll discover a menu jammed with Sri Lankan classics.

Whether Lankan Tucker is Aussie or Sri Lankan doesn’t really matter. With food this tasty, coffee this good and vibe this welcoming, one thing’s for sure: it’s quintessentially Melbourne.

Melbourne is renowned for its rich coffee culture and top-tier breakfast spots. After all, our city would probably win the most variations on a smashed avo. With a different cafe on nearly every corner, this is where to find the best breakfast in Melbourne:

GoodFood Australia’s Nina Rousseau talks about Lankan Tucker’s fresh spin on bringing Sri Lankan cuisine to the country. Lankan Tucker’s menu is an evolution of tried and tested bestseller dishes, such as the deep-fried Roti Chips with chilli, paprika, & lime, and the massively popular Kotthu Roti, a Sri Lankan street food staple of wok-tossed shredded roti, curry, and vegetables.

Nerissa Jayasingha and Hiran Kroon reinvigorate Sri Lankan food in the Melbourne brunch scene, as well as educate everyone more about Sri Lanka’s culture through the food they serve. They’ve also launched Supiri Soulfoods – a food pickup and delivery service, thus, bringing Sri Lankan food closer to everyone, especially Aussie-born Sri Lankans,
in Melbourne.

Sri Lankan food has not had its day in Melbourne yet, but we reckon Lankan Tucker is going to start a ‘thing.’
Hoppers – a fermented rice and coconut bowl-shaped crepe – come with a runny egg cooked in its centre alongside coconut, onion and parsley sambols which provide crunch and freshness. Urad lentil pancakes or a kotthu roti are more substantial choices if you prefer your breakfast to stick to your guts.

The Good Food & Wine Show is Australia’s largest consumer food and beverage event.

Each year, over 110,000 visitors head to the shows, in Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, and Brisbane, to experience a day out where they can take home a new discovery, to inspire their next foodie adventure.

Sometimes, the ol’ avo and toast just doesn’t cut it. If you’re drifting around the Brunswick area, looking for a brunch venue that’s shaking things up, you can’t go wrong with Lankan Tucker, a Sri Lankan-inspired cafe that’s serving up some delicious breakfast plates, lunchtime feasts and baked goods.

Lankan Tucker is leading the charge in reinventing Sri Lankan food for Melbourne diners. Beginning life as a humble market stall, Lankan Tucker now does a roaring breakfast and lunch trade on one of Brunswick West’s busiest streets. It’s at 486 Albion St.

I love heading to Lankan Tucker in Brunswick West. They have blends from two of my favourite roasters ST ALI Coffee Roastery and Code Black Coffee Roasters. The Sri Lankan/Australian Fusion cuisine is to die for and Hiran and Nerissa are lovely.

With the Festival of the Sea and a special Seasonal Stars, as well as our new weekly Sunday World BBQ, the extension of the Night Market and exciting specialty markets, there is lots of fun to be had at the Market this autumn.

Lankan Tucker is pushing Melbourne foodies out of their comforting brunch zone—for good reason. Offering a more modern take on brunch, Lankan champions traditional Sri Lankan flavours like the Roti Riser with roti, curry, coconut sambol, seeni sambol and a poached egg. Brunch differently this weekend with some of Melbourne’s best coffee.
